Environmental programs and groups

A number of community environment groups and programs operate in Caloundra City.

Environment programs:

  • Clean Beach Challenge
  • BUTTsOut
  • Green and Healthy Schools
  • Keep Australia Beautiful, Queensland
  • Clean Up Australia Day 2007

Clean Beach Challenge

The Clean Beach Challenge brings out the best in Queenslanders – a spirit of fun competition in the quest to be selected as the Sunshine State's cleanest beach. More than 140 beaches enter this competition every year, from right along the coastline and into Torres Strait and the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Caloundra City’s Currimundi Beach was named Queensland’s Cleanest Beach 2004.

For more information on the Clean Beach Challenge, visit the Keep Australia Beautiful (Qld) website.

BUTTsOut

Initiated in Australia by Dr Vince Murdoch and Steve Brossman who saw a need to take action on cigarette butt litter, BUTTsOUT is an enduring, simple-to-use solution to the problem of 4.3 trillion cigarette butts discarded every year.

Building on the success of their Australian and early UK experience, BUTTsOUT is now commencing butt litter prevention in North America, Canada and Europe.

For more information, visit the BUTTsOUT website.

Green and Healthy Schools

Queensland schools have the opportunity to become the greenest and healthiest in Australia through the country's most comprehensive health and environment program for students.

Keep Australia Beautiful Council (Qld) Inc's program, Comalco Green and Healthy Schools, attracts nominations from about 400 Queensland schools, more than 21 per cent of all schools in the State.

Comalco Green and Healthy Schools encourages schools to develop a green and healthy philosophy and to tackle a range of issues at the school level including nutrition, waste minimisation, energy usage, litter and recycling.

For information on the Green and Healthy Schools program, visit the Keep Australia Beautiful (Qld) website.

Keep Australia Beautiful, Queensland

Keep Australia Beautiful Council (Qld) Inc was established in 1971 and is the State’s longest standing community based, environmental organisation. It is an independent, not-for-profit organisation.

The Keep Australia Beautiful (KAB) programs motivate people to enhance the quality of their local environment through personal initiative and community action.

Litter abatement, resource conservation, re-afforestation, land care, general beautification and increased environmental awareness are the natural products of KAB programs.

Good citizenship, pride and empowerment are the human outcomes.

Through interaction with local governments, businesses, community groups and committed individuals, Keep Australia Beautiful encourages a statewide network of grassroots volunteers who work to deliver a cleaner environment, better resource management and community beautification.

For information visit the Keep Australia Beautiful (Qld) website.
